Spring breakers are ready to hit cool vacation destinations around the world, as a new report shows that Tijuana, Mexico is the most dangerous city in the world in 2018.
In a report by Citizens’ Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice finds that Mexico has five out of six of the world’s most dangerous cities. Homicides are growing at unprecedented levels as the government cracks down in a military fashion. The local gangs are fighting for drug territory in Tijuana.
In Tijuana the report counted 138 killings per 100,000 citizens, or seven deaths a day. José Alberto Álvarez Mendoza, the city’s district attorney, put the focus on petty drug dealing in the local area. Forcing community gangs to fight block-by-block for local outlets.
According to Victor Clark Alfaro, Tijuana’s expert on narco-traffic, “The cartel leaders – now the kind of people you’d meet at the country-club – have lost control of the low-level street dealers.” Álvarez claims, “The homicides are often people that know each other. They stake out turf, then defend or expand it. These are not cartels, they are cells.”
The Citizen’s Council says the fourth and fifth most violent cities were located in two of Mexico’s northern states; Ciudad Victoria, in Tamaulipas, and Ciudad Juarez, in Chihuahua. Ensenada made the list as well at 34. In total there are 15 Mexican cities on the list of 50.
